Glinsk NS wins €25,000 regional award: “Building For The Future” – 2002

Glinsk National School won the regional title for Connaught/Ulster in the Building for the Future competition, beating off competition form over 1,200 participating schools.

Glinsk NS.Apart from the title, the school was also awarded 25,000 euro which was presented to Marty Ward by Mr Eugene Fitzsimons of Independent Newspapers, and Joe Collins of CIE, the Two sponsors of the nationwide competition.” Improving Our Community” was the theme of the competition, the winning project presented a snapshot of Glinsk as it is at the moment. With emphasis on community projects- plan of social housing, development for the elderly and development of the resources in the area.

In the Presented submission the Glinsk children gave an over-view of their community and school from environment, sporting, traditions, music and drama to helping the Third World.

The school has just been refurbished over the summer at a cost of 200,000 euro and in their report the children outlined the energy saving measures the development incorporated. The school also plans to develop a wildlife garden, set up a small wind turbine and harness solar energy for outside lighting.

The official awards were presented by An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern at a ceremony held in Dublin, attended by the Glinsk students, teachers and Board of management with their triumphant return marked by bonfires throughout Glinsk.
